The Nutured Heart Approach®
Improving the African Parenting and Educational Style for better outcomes in Children and Youths
The Nurtured Heart Approach: How African Parenting and Education can be improved.
Have you ever wondered why some children seem to thrive in any situation, while others struggle with low self-esteem, poor academic performance, or behavioral problems? Have you ever wished you could help your child develop a positive and resilient mindset, without resorting to harsh punishments or empty praises?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might be interested in learning more about the Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) to help with improving your relationship with your children and better parenting style.
Howard Glasser created the Nurtured Heart Approach® (NHA) in 1992 to help children and adults with problematic behaviors. It is behavior inspiration rather than management. When things are going well, repeated experiences of being noticed and acknowledged lead people to construct a positive portfolio of themselves: a broad and increasing store of what NHA calls Inner Wealth™.
NHA aims to unlock this inner wealth by creating strong and nurturing relationships between children and adults, based on three core principles (“The 3 Stands of the Nurtured Heart Approach®”):
- Absolutely No!
I refuse to energize negativity: This means that adults do not give any energy, attention, or emotion to negative behaviors or attitudes of children, such as tantrums, whining, complaining, or disrespect. Instead, they calmly set clear and consistent limits and consequences, without getting angry or frustrated. - Absolutely Yes!
I will super-energize experiences of success.: This means that adults give abundant energy, attention, and emotion to positive behaviors or attitudes of children, such as cooperation, kindness, curiosity, or enthusiasm. Instead of using generic or exaggerated praises, they use specific and authentic recognition, appreciation, and celebration. - Absolutely Clear! I will set clear limits and provide clear, un-energized consequences.: This means that adults help children understand the rules and expectations of their environment, as well as the consequences of their choices. Instead of using vague or inconsistent messages, they use clear and concise communication, feedback, and guidance.
By applying these principles consistently and effectively, NHA helps children develop a strong sense of self-worth, responsibility, and confidence. NHA also helps adults create a positive and supportive atmosphere in their homes, classrooms, or workplaces.
NHA has been proven to be effective in various settings and cultures around the world. In particular, NHA has been adopted by many schools and families in Africa, especially in Nigeria. NHA has been shown to improve academic achievement, social skills, emotional regulation, and mental health among African children. NHA has also been shown to reduce stress, burnout, and violence among African adults.
NHA is not only a method but also a philosophy and a lifestyle. It is based on the belief that every child and every adult has a unique and valuable contribution to make to the world. It is based on the vision that every child and every adult can live up to their full potential and achieve their dreams. It is based on the hope that every child and every adult can experience joy and happiness in their lives.
