Breaking the Silence:
Shagamu Stands United Against Child Sexual Violence
On November 18, 2024, Suburbancares hosted “Empowering Voices: Ending Silence”, an event at Christ Redeemers College, Shagamu, to address child sexual violence.
This initiative, part of the UN International Day for Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence, brought together over 400 students, teachers, and parents to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and inspire action.
Key Objectives:
- Educate youths about sexual violence, focusing on online abuse.
- Encourage victims to speak up.
- Provide a platform for survivor stories to inspire healing.
- Promote dialogue through interactive discussions.
Event Highlights
Key speakers included Dr. Bukola Ogunkua, who detailed legal frameworks for victims, Miss Kanga Rasi, who facilitated survivor stories, and Pastor Antoinette Omo-Osagie, who shared insights on creating safe environments. A 10-minute video featuring survivor accounts moved attendees deeply, prompting breakout discussions led by youth advocates. Groups explored protective strategies, available resources, and individual roles in preventing exploitation.
Support and Outcomes
The event saw courageous disclosures from children, met with immediate counseling support and follow-up care. An engaging Q&A session with Dr. Ogunkua further empowered attendees with actionable knowledge.
Looking Ahead Suburbancares plans to:
- Expand the reach of future events.
- Incorporate interactive workshops.
- Establish follow-up support for survivors.
